What Bare Concrete Is Doing Down There
A slab that was never meant to be a finished floor behaves like one that was never meant to be a finished floor.
It dusts, and the dust gets into everything
Bare concrete sheds fine grey powder continuously as it is walked on. In a basement that powder settles on everything stored down there, and sweeping moves it rather than removing it. Sealing the surface stops it at the source.
It stains and it does not come back
Concrete is porous. Anything spilled soaks in rather than sitting on top, so a basement slab keeps a record of every leak it has had. We grind that surface off rather than trying to clean it.
It is cold because it is uninsulated, and a coating does not change that
We would rather say so than sell you a floor on a promise it cannot keep. A resin floor is warmer underfoot than bare concrete and it is not underfloor heating.
Moisture Decides This One More Than Any Other Room
A basement slab sits below grade and against soil on every side. That is the hardest case for a coating and the reason we test before we quote.
Water moves up through a slab you cannot see it in
Vapour passes through concrete continuously, and with nothing on top it evaporates off the surface and you never notice. Seal the surface and it collects at the bond line instead.
The test costs you nothing and takes a day
Tape a two foot square of clear plastic to the bare slab, seal all four edges, leave it a full day and look underneath. Condensation means moisture is moving. Run it before anybody quotes you, ourselves included.

We tell you. Depending on how much is moving there are systems built for it, and there are slabs we would rather you did not spend money on this year.

Flake for a floor that gets used
A chip blend hides the marks a working basement collects and gives the surface texture underfoot, which matters more on a floor people walk on in socks than on a garage slab.
Solid colour where the room is going to be finished
If the basement is becoming a room rather than storage, a solid colour reads as a floor rather than as a coating.
Metallic if it is a space you are showing off
It costs more in time and material and it is the finish people put in a basement bar. We pour it the same way we pour it upstairs.
Getting the Room Ready
Most of what slows a basement job is not the floor.
Everything has to come off the slab
We grind the whole floor, so the room needs to be clear. This is the part worth planning a week ahead.
Dust extraction runs on the grinder
It is a basement, so there is nowhere for airborne dust to go. The grinder runs with extraction attached for that reason rather than as an upgrade.
Cure times are the same as anywhere
We give you walk-on and park-on dates at the quote. In a basement the second one usually means when the shelving can go back.

Can you coat a basement floor that has painted concrete on it?
Usually. It comes off with the grinder, and what is underneath decides the rest. We look before we quote.
Will it stop my basement smelling damp?
No, and anybody who says it will is selling you something. A coating seals the slab surface. It does not fix a drainage or a ventilation problem.
Is a basement floor cheaper than a garage floor?
It depends on the state of the slab and how much preparation it needs, not on which room it is in. The cost page explains what moves it.
How long before we can put furniture back?
You get walk-on and load-on dates at the quote. They are not the same date and the second one is the one to plan around.
Will it stop the slab feeling cold?
Not on its own. A coated slab is warmer underfoot than bare concrete and it is still an uninsulated floor sitting on soil. If the room is being finished properly, insulation goes under the finish and that is a different trade.
